Kalyani Avula had the privilege to learn dance from an early age.. She was extremely fortunate to be a disciple of Sri. D.V. Satya Kumar and Padmashree Dr. Shobha Naidu. Her passion for Kuchipudi knew no bounds having been mentored by such great gurus. She has been continuously learning and performing this great dance form ever since. She had the honor of performing with Smt. Shobha Naidu during various performances including performing alongside her on a nation-wide US tour. Over the years, she had the honor of working with multiple eminent gurus.
Having gained the knowledge from such esteemed gurus and having given hundreds of performances both in India and the US it made her realize the need to pass on her experiences and learnings of Kuchipudi to the next generation of aspiring dancers. This desire of hers led to the establishment of Abhinaya Kuchipudi Dance Academy in Dallas, Texas in 2001 and finishing Masters in Kuchipudi. The school now operates in multiple locations where hundreds of students have been shaped with the art form. She takes great pleasure in reaching out to each and every student and seeing them transform from amateurs to skilled performers. She strongly opines that providing a strong foundation of necessary basics with accompanying cultural values to the students will propel them towards excellence in the field. This will enable them to take this art form to much higher levels.
Her choreographies received much applause from various eminent personalities and dignitaries and left a mesmerizing effect on the audience. She attributes this to her influence of the rich lineage of her elite gurus.
Over the years Kalyani Avula and her students performed at various events organized by a number of cultural and non-profit organizations in the US. She played prominent roles in numerous ballets.:
1994 - Title of “Natya Kaumudi” awarded by Sri Satyam Kuchipudi Nrutya Niketan
2005 - Title of “Natya Visharada” by Smt. Shobha Naidu’s Kuchipudi Art Academy
2008 - Guinness record holder as part of the “Mahabrunda Natyam” as part of Silicon Andhra
About the school:
Abhinaya Kuchupudi Dance Academy(AKDA) believes in providing ample opportunities to its students to excel this traditional dance form. To empower this belief, the academy conducts regular workshops by eminent Gurus who pass on their share of intellect on Kuchipudi to the budding artists. This helps the student understand and imbibe the finer nuances of this art form, making them better performers. Also these workshops help support senior gurus who are struggling to make ends meet in spite of their wide body of knowledge in this field. Several charitable donations are made in money and kind to such great Gurus in Kuchipudi who had in their time helped shape this ancient dance form.
AKDA also conducts annual Ballets, the proceedings of which are donated to various charitable organizations such as:
City House - Plano - To provide emergency shelter and transitional residential services to at-risk children and young adults who are in need due to abuse, neglect or homelessness.
PureOnline.Org - To address the insufficiencies in disadvantaged rural and urban schools, in order to ensure quality learning experiences which will lead to greater opportunities for India’s youth .
Garland Senior Center - To entertain the senior citizens and give them joy of the artform and warmth with personal interaction.
Allen Community Outreach - to provide free comprehensive human services in Allen, and surrounding communities in Collin County, Texas.
Several performances are done by AKDA students to support temples, local and national non-profit charity organizations. It is indeed a brilliant idea to combine dance and charity since that's what Kuchipudi teaches deeply…. Compassion, morality and responsibility in bringing the community together.
